After a deadly train robbery, Sheriff John Ryder of Cactus Gulch, New Mexico finally manages to apprehend William "Gun Slingin'" Garrett, a wanted criminal, after a dangerous chase through the desert. Garrett is eventually convicted of his crimes and sentenced to hang. With the entire town looking on, the noose is placed around Garrett's neck. Satisfied that justice has been done, Ryder watches the bandit in his last moments of life. Or so he thinks. Carl Garrett, a brilliant professor, after receiving a letter from his wayward brother, comes out west to help him.
