Forty-year-old India has a fabulously hip life in Denver and a long-distance lover in New York with whom she shares the perfect not-too-serious relationship. But when India's father dies, she must honor the promise she made to him: to look after her mother, Eldora, when he's gone.

Once upon a time, Eldora Redding regaled her daughters with tales of her glamorous days as a Las Vegas showgirl--stories of music and martinis at the Sahara, back when Frank and Sammy ruled the town. Now sixty- something and still larger-than-life, Eldora both intrigues and infuriates India, who is suddenly thrown a curveball when Eldora insists that they hit the road to search for India's twin, Gypsy, an artist who lives in the mountains of New Mexico.
