She had thought she was welcome at Hill House…and yet she was not so sure. St first she conceded she might be imagining things -- the too sudden silences, the disappearing shadows, the growing uncommunicativeness of her guardian who seemed more and more to be avoiding her.
Almost against her will she felt a small curl of panic begin to grow. But it was the mysterious death of William Handley nearby on the riding path that materialized her fears. She knew it was not safe to remain at Hill House, but was held there by an inexplicable sense of loyalty and a growing love for a man whom she had grown to distrust.
Jane Barrett watched the growing feud between Carey Raymond and William Handley with great interest. The gentlemen were at each other's throats, each fighting to control the quiet town. Jane had no idea that politics could arouse quite that amount of passion. Then Handley was found dead and Jane's world began to fall.
