Book Information

I tried to do a search on a book's ISBN and the results showed a different title. What's going on?

When Harlequin bought Silhouette from Simon and Schuster in the late 80's, Silhouette started using Harlequin's ISBN prefix (0373) while Simon & Schuster started reusing the Silhouette ISBNs. Publishers have to pay R.R. Bowker (the exclusve agency responsible for maintaining the ISBN database and issuing numbers) for each ISBN, so they thought they'd save a little money by reusing the numbers originally assigned to the out-of-print booklist. The 0671 series pop up most frequently attached to Star Wars serials that were published in the mid 90s. Smaller publishing houses and self-publishing authors have been known to reuse ISBN numbers also, and occasionally, errors are made when preparing a book for printing, leaving a previously used ISBN on the backcover of a new title.
