Matt Garrett had the distinct impression that assistant city editor Anne McKenna didn't approve of him--or of his daily, controversial column. He was right. She didn't.

Anne was furious that Matt had returned to Lakemont to take over the Garrett family newspaper, with no real newspaper experience--other than writing his irresponsible columns. What's more, she was sure he was doing everything he could to get her fired.

Anne believed in climbing the corporate ladder on merit, not on connections. Matt believed in mergers and keeping everything in the family--including Anne.
