As Dan Ruylander climbed down from the stagecoach at Baker City, Oregon, he was thinking of the grim job that faced him...and had been ever since leaving Wyoming.

The plan was to win the confidence of Garry and Sue Terrell, owners of the Triangle Ranch, and arrange to buy three thousand Shorthorns to drive back to his father's ranch, Rafter. Then, by deception, Dan was to get the herd well on the trail without paying for it. What Dan feared most was that he would find it too easy to like Garry Terrell. Then Garry suggested that he join the drive back to Wyoming, along with the toughest of the Triangle crew as the necessary extra hands, and Dan feels he must agree. The Oregon outfit outnumbered Dan's own bunch three to one and were spoiling for a fight.
