On the afternoon of October 19, 1781, British regiments marched down a road below Yorktown, Virginia, between lines of victorious American troops and their French Allies. As the British marched to an open field to surrender their muskets and flags, a British band played “The Whole World Upside Down.” For the British Empire, that day was truly the world upside down. World Upside Down is the story of the people and events during the campaign that led to that momentous event at Yorktown. It tells of Americans, both black and white, and of the officers and men of the American, French, British and Hessian armies. It relates the struggle of the cat-and-mouse campaigns in North Carolina and Virginia. The clash of the British and French fleets to gain control of the Chesapeake Bay is chronicled. World Upside Down is the final novel in the trilogy that began with The Hill and A Thunder of Drums: New York, 1776.
