Belinda Masters had recently learned that she wasn't an orphan, as she had always thought; she had inexplicably been abandoned at birth by her aristocratic mother. “Who are you? Where are you staying?” he asked abruptly.
I walked on without answering, and was thankful that he let me go without further hindrance. I heard him turn his horse and ride away, and against my will, I paused and watched his departure. He sat easily in the saddle, the effortless response of his body to the horse's movements conveying a sort of fierce pleasure.
It was only then, as I watched his departing back, that I was aware of the brutal set of his shoulders and the way he crashed the great beast through the undergrowth with savage delight.
I went on my way, glad that I should never see the man again. But I was wrong; we met at Queen's Manor. I knew at last who he was, but I could not tell what he would become: my friend, my enemy, my beloved -- or the instrument of my destruction…
