Valentina Burford and Rosamund Drew both have fine soprano voices and are determined to succeed in the music world. Both girls begin to do well - but whereas Rosamund falls in love with one man after another, Tina is determined to allow nothing to interfere with her career. But when they both meet Jerry Bilchester, patron of the opera, Tina embarks upon an affair with him, only to lose him. She turns for consolation to Oliver Leone, a gifted composer. For a while it seems that the girls' friendship may be in jeopardy - but the ties between them are too strong to sever.

A contemporary saga set against the backdrop of the world of opera, whichspans two decades in the lives of childhood friends who both seek success as opera singers.
