Trouble at Wild River
With the help of a Chippewa Indian boy, Kate and Anders race against time…

It was a cloudless March night when Kate, Anders, and Erik first spotted the timber swindler. On their way to see Joe, a Chippewa Indian boy who is helping his grandmother make maple syrup, they happen upon a man dressed in dark clothes. By a lantern's light, he is changing the ownership markings on logs that farmers plan to send down the river. Who is this thief? If only Kate and the boys could have seen his face!

When Mama receives word that her brother Ben wants to visit, suspicion turns toward him. While living in Sweden, Ben stole money from a local merchant, then disappeared without a trace. Could he be the thief discovered the night before?

Ben's letter gives them only two days to meet him or he'll leave, never to be seen by the family again. With Mama's baby coming soon, Kate and Anders must cross the St. Croix River without their father's help. Can they escape danger and find Ben before the sun goes down.

THE MYSTERY OF THE TIMBER SWINDLER THREATENS THEM WHEREVER THEY GO!
