Ever since Peter could remember he'd wanted to be a sea captain like his father, but now that his father had drowned, he knew that he had no choice. He had to stay on land and take care of his grieving mother. His conscience told him he had to go live with her and their relatives in some boring, godforsaken place, where there were too many trees and no ocean in sight.
