Ed Nelson, Private Investigator, is a strong believer in private enterprise, and running his own agency is as good a way as any of avoiding the nine-to-five rat race. He asks no more from life than enough money to keep him in smokes and the Hankey Barrister's Scotch whisky flowing through his veins.

Sorting out love triangles, a little old-fashioned divorce snooping, process serving and undemanding debt collecting are his specialties. A man of nervous disposition except when roused or the better for drink - he has been known to scream at the sight of blood - murder cases are out of his class. But when Limehouse Louie, an underworld friend to whom he owes a favour, stumbled into Nelson's office with a bullet in his chest and fell dead at his feet ina pool of 'claret', he knew he must do something about it.

With every crooked 'firm' in London muscling in on the act, it soon becomes clear that he will have his work cut out just staying alive, let alone getting the malefactors behind bars. Nelson drinks and wisecracks his quixotic way through his familiar Soho patch, in search of the 'grass' who set Louie up and a priceless diamond with an ancient curse on it. And rubs just about everybody up the wrong way.

Too many policemen, too many crooks, too many late nights and too many hangovers; this caper is a proliferation of all the disasters that Ed Nelson's seedy flesh is heir to, and a raucous successor to 'The Dead Butler Caper'. Book Dust Jacket
