The day Paula Dunsworth showed up at Steven LeMarr's prestigious San Francisco art gallery she had five hundred dollars in her pocket, dreams of being an artist in her heart -- and no place to live. She was delighted when Steven offered her a job as “house-sitter” for a friend and neighbor who was traveling in Europe. He was sure the little bungalow overlooking the Pacific was the perfect place to paint the pictures that would launch her on a successful career.
Paula was even more delighted by the interest Steven showed in her, and she found herself more and more drawn to this strong, handsome man. What she couldn't understand was why he kept trying to discourage her from painting, even after his friend Eric Westcott offered to arranger a special show for her work. She thought Steven was her friend -- and she wanted him to be so much more -- yet it was almost as though he wanted her to fail. How could she explain the terrible, frightening things that begin happening?
