Set in 1899 outside the town of Jamestown, North Dakota, Ann Statesman marries Todd Brothers in order to escape the heartbreak of watching Kent with his new love, Rebecca. Though she grew up knowing Todd, she never considered a romantic relationship with him. In fact, she found him bothersome most of the time. When Todd reveals his plan to move to North Dakota, she insists that he marry her and take her with him. Though hesitant, he agrees for he can't deny his love for her.

As she adjusts to her new life on a farm without the comforts of riches, she embraces a closer relationship to God and discovers a newfound friendship with Todd who promises to wait for her to be ready before consummating their marriage. Just as she begins to open her heart to him, she learns that Kent has ended his engagement to Rebecca and is coming for her. In the struggle between the spirit and the flesh, she ultimately decides that love is more than a feeling; it is a choice. But Kent is not willing to let her go without a fight, and she will need to rely on God to sustain her through the turmoil that lies ahead.
