Mary Hunter was having a very pleasant friendship with the charming Martin Cochrane. Perhaps neither of them so far felt seriously enough to consider marriage, but there was plenty of time. Anyway, for the moment Mary was more interested in getting on with her career and taking up her new post as house surgeon at Charlford Hospital. It was just coincidence that there she should meet the consultant Richard Cochrane, Martin's brother, and it did not take her long to realise that Richard was the better man.
