Helen Drake had come all the way to Janus Island, one of the remote, fogbound Channel Islands, to marry the man she loved--and found a funeral instead of a wedding; Humphrey had killed himself almost on the eve of her arrival. Or had he...?

Heartsick, Helen prepared to return to England, but Charles Godfrey, Humphrey's partner, begged her to stay. So did Blane Harvard, the taciturn young archeologist with a shadowy past. And so she stayed, as much to clear Humphrey's name as because she had no place else to go.

Little by little Helen realized that Janus was the seat of a cult of semi-literate devil worshipers. And, to her horror, she discovered she couldn't leave if she wanted to: she was to be the human sacrifice at an obscene black mass!

Either Charles or Blane was the high priest of the cult, using the evil ceremony to get rid of her.

Which one? Helen wondered as the seconds of her life ticked away. And why?
