Jess and Squint, two new friends, find themselves joined together in tracking down a band of seven renegade Indians who have taken Cathy and Addie, Jess's wife and sister-in-law, captive. Along the way they befriend Tanner and Chinee-Boy who join them in this endeavor, and a black woman, Winnie. They also encounter a group of Texas Rangers as well as the US Cavalry. This story unfolds on and around the vast area, then uncharted, known as the Staked Plains, The High Plains or the Llano Estacado, an area steeped in mystery and known only to the Indians and Commancheros at that time. The characters in this story experience many hardships and harrowing events as their mission unfolds, as well as some good times they learned this country could offer. They experience what this country had always been and also see it come to an end. It is a story of adventure, love, hardship, and faith.
