Charles returns to Denver after George has heart problems and collapses. Dr. Green is not sure the new modern method of treating George's condition would be the right way to handle his problem and has words with the two new doctors. It is decided to take George to New York for surgery. Charles accompanies George to New York and becomes involved with an angry crime boss that has put a price on Charles' head. Charles receives the devastating news that on a recent mission, the U.S. Deputy Marshals were attacked by Indians. A Deputy Marshal was severely injured, and Charles' blood-brother, Gray Wolf, had come up missing after he had struck out on his own to come in behind the Indians that were firing at the Marshals. Unable to hold their positions, and to seek medical help for the injured man, they are forced to leave without helping Gray Wolf. Against advice, Charles sets out to find and save his blood-brother. Charles is put into a dangerous situation. To save Gray Wolf, he must risk his own life. Charles new food store has a rocky beginning and requires training on Bernard's part. Charles begins to wonder if Bernard is the best man to run the food store. Charles' horses are ready for their first race of the season, and he takes them to New Orleans for the first big race of the season.
