Victoria got shipped off by her mother to Kansas. It was for her own good, but life wasn't turning out how she thought it would. She did agree to go, but she'd had no choice but to agree. When her mother's mind was made up, there was no changing it.

So here was Victoria, a socialite from New York in a Kansas cow town that had no class. No servants meant she had to learn to do things on her own. She had to even do work. She decided that she'd better fall back on her good nature and learn how to survive in Derby, Kansas.

Tate was happy to have her there, even though he was worried she wouldn't make it. He certainly wanted her to be happy, but life in Derby was probably difficult for a socialite from a big city. He also hoped details from his past ventures into the world of courting would stay in the past. Was hope enough or was action required to wipe that slate clean?
