The Velvet Spur
The last request that Maria Dane's mother had made was that she should travel to Corsica to meet the aunt she had never seen. There she met her aunt and was enchanted with the island. Maria had often wondered why her mother had never spoken of the home and family that she had left when she had married an Englishman, and she also discovered a long lasting feud that existed between her family and the neighboring Laurents.

Gian Laurent and his brother Orso might be able to explain the mystery to her. But why did her aunt so strongly disapprove of them? It was a disapproval that Maria did not share, for she soon found herself falling in love with Orso -- and there her real troubles began, for Orso was destined by his family for the glamorous Chantal. To forbid oneself love is to give it spurs', someone had told Maria -- and alas, how true that was!
