THE DEVIL'S EYE

The chain was light, delicately wrought gold. Suspended from a ring of platinum was a tear-shaped red stone encased in a web of gold so fine its lines seemed to have been etched on the surface of the gem itself. As soon as she saw it, Jane knew she could never live without it, that once she placed it around her neck she would never want to take it off. And as Richard swung the necklace round her neck, Jane felt an excitement that was almost sexual.
Then he said, “It's got a name, you know…the jewel.”
“How very nice. What is it?
“It's called the Devil's Eye.”
And as the name was spoken, the pendant seemed to move to response. Jane's eyes opened wide with terror as the chain tightened on her throat. “I can't breathe,” she screamed. She tore her hand away from her throat, reaching for Richard, but it was too late. Everything was over. She felt herself falling, as if in slow motion, as a great warmth surrounded her. And then darkness took over…
