"Sorry to let you have it like this," Sybil Howell said abruptly, "but a clean break is always best... Van loves me, Miss Adams. He always has."

Mel simply stared at the girl Van's family wanted him to marry. "I don't believe you," she said flatly. "Van and I are in love, and if he fell out of love with me, he would tell me!"

Sybil looked unperturbed. "He will tell you himself, of course. The poor darling is so tender-hearted that I was only trying to spare him."

Mel refused to be shaken. It was all a lie, and yet...Sybil seemed so sure!
