Vanessa's love for Gareth had come swiftly and effortlessly, and now she was afraid it would dies with the same ease. Already she could feel Hester's delicate hands strangling their marriage.

Gareth was drifting away from her and she knew why: Hester had insinuated that men -- especially Gareth's business partner -- found Vanessa “too attractive.”

Vanessa knew if she lost Gareth she would lose her reason for living. Yet she was ready to risk everything to make him see that the cause of the smoldering malice and hate at Monks Wood was Hester -- his mother…

“Affair! Don't be ridiculous, Hester. You surely don't imagine that I'd indulge in an affair with a man like that? Or with any other man for that matter.”
“Now come, Vanessa, you mustn't pretend with me.”
Vanessa stared aghast. She saw the bight, tight smile upon her mother-in-law's face and hated her for it. Vanessa's mouth opened upon an angry protest, but something about Hester's face silenced her. Behind the dimpled smile and purring voice there was more than reprimand or threat -- Hester had declared open war.
Vanessa ran from her, afraid -- more afraid than she had been since the day she arrived at Monks Wood and saw her gentle little mother-in-law holding out predatory arms towards her.
