Not wanting to go into the banking business, Henry Allen leaves home in the night and goes to backwoods Georgia to teach and write. He finds a protective mentor in an old science teacher and he falls in love with the daughter of an Evangelical preacher. They move with their mentor to suburbia and find a new life, have twins, discover new teaching, suffer loss, enjoy reunited families and discover the cruelest blow of all.
