An American hippie named Jack Hamilton finds himself in the splendor and disorder of the imperial city of Calcutta, trapped between a love for Annapurna and a political insurrection led by the man called Nandalla. The action culminates in the fury of the festival in the Square of Native Town where characters like The Fat Man, King Rooster and the Naxalite revolutionary meet their fate.
The book captures what it was like to be young, searching and far away from home in the late 1960's.
