Will Cooper had been born on Hatchet Range, and had sworn to defend it against all odds. Now, two people threatened him: Fred Bashell, greedy and desperate; and Jennie Clark, whose family were homesteaders on one of the Hatchet cattle's watering holes. Cooper knew there would be a showdown with Bashell, but was hopingfor peace with Jennie.
