Betony had "the other face" that appeared from time to time in the Dovewood family. Her cousin's Linny and Gerard, recognized it--dark-and delicate--as soon as she stepped off the train, arriving for her all-too-temporary holiday from being unpaid maid-of-all-work to two eccentric old aunt's, May and Maple.

But none of the Dovewood's could have guessed the origin of Betony's face nor how she would find the key to that origin in the family past. For the old cracked china knick-knack, discovered in her grandfather's shop, gave no hint of possessing strange power!
