For months Johnny Dixon has been working on the riddle that would reveal the hiding place of wealthy Mr. Glomus's will. A $10,000 reward is waiting for whoever finds the missing document -- money that Johnny can surely use.

Johnny feels certain that the riddles answer lies somewhere in the dead man's house. Even though Professor Roderick Childermass, Johnny's neighbor and friend, warns him to stay away, Johnny enters the deserted mansion one night and creeps toward the dark crypt holding the body of H. Bagwell Glomus. Suddenly a bolt of lightning flashes and Johnny sees that he is not alone. Something not quite human is almost upon him!
