Most of the characters in these previously published and in some cases award-nominated or winning pieces are on a path, though not necessarily one well-chosen. Included among those journeying are San Francisco street performers, a widow, a gangster's enforcer, a conflicted writer, and people struggling with some kind of disability or other--all on a path, sometimes through genuine brambles and often roadblocks of their own making.
