As an illustrator of children's books in a large publishing firm, Betty Archer had a job which she liked and was perfectly happy. In fact, it was actually a relief each morning to reach the sanctuary of the office and to escape the old brownstone which she inhabited with her grandmother and which stood in the center of a pile of rubble; the site of a projected housing complex.

Things became even worse when the old lady's refusal to give up her dwelling hit the headlines and became a cause celebre. For that not only put Betty in an unwelcome limelight, but revived the old story of her grandfather's mysterious disappearance many years before. Yet her devotion to her grandmother was such that Betty could not fail to stand by her in the crisis, even at the risk of personal peril.
