When Rose wakes up in a strange tavern bedchamber with no memory of who she is or how she got there, all she knows is fear. But that fear is heightened when she hears a cheering crowd and looks from the window to see that the view is of the scaffold of the Tower. A young man is being led, screaming out his innocence, up the steps of that scaffold and towards the block where the executioner waits to cut off his head. But why does that young man look familiar to Rose and why does his death cause her so much grief? And when she learns that the young man she saw executed was convicted of adultery with the Queen, she knows that is not right, that the Queen would never stoop so low. But how does she know? And how is she so certain of that Queen's image that she can visualise her in her mind. When told that she has been in a terrible coach accident in which her fellow passengers all died, and that she has been unconscious for a week, Rose is afraid to reveal that she has no memory in case someone thinks her soul has been claimed by a demon. Then Lord Matthew Harcourt arrives in search of his missing bride, whom he has recently married by proxy, and he is convinced that Rose is that bride, Lady Madeleine. Rose begins to accept that he is right and she is indeed his wife but the dreams of a handsome young minstrel continue to torment her and to endanger her marriage to Matthew, with whom she has fallen in love. How can Rose move forward when she has no memory of her past and will she ever discover who it is who haunts her dreams at night?
