Behind the gaiety and glitter of life at Saratoga Spring, Felicia Delmar sensed something dark, something threatening, something that could not risk exposure--and so she must be destroyed...

Sun and Shadow...

Saratoga Springs was as exciting as Felicia Delmar had imagined it would be: the women beautiful and fashionably dressed, the men handsome and gallant (the handsomest George Schulyer, a young man she had met on the train), the Grand Hotel truly grand. But not everything was perfect about her Aunt Salina's unexpected invitation to accompany her to Saratoga. Felicia did not care too much for Salina's friends--especially fat Colonel Whitehead, who seemed to have some king of cruel hold on her, and his inscrutable and rather frightening companion, Mrs. Daniels. What troubled Felicia most, however, was the eerie feeling that none of the people around her were quite what they pretended to be--not even Aunt Salina...not even George! But she wasn't afraid, not yet...not until she began to doubt her own identity!

Intuition...

Salina looked bewildered and suddenly I felt sorry for her. I said, "Aunt Salina, are you in trouble? Is there anything I can do?"
The look she gave me was a combination of surprise and gratitude, but it was gone in a flash. "Why should I be in trouble?" she snapped.
I hesitated. "I don't know, but I felt you didn't want to rent this house, that the colonel made you."
She gave a visible start at my words, and then a veil came down over her face. "You are a silly imaginative child." she said. I never do anything I don't want to..."
But I knew she was lying.
