Ellen Winlock had been on a lighthearted, impetuous trip to visit Hank McNeil, the man she hoped to marry, when abruptly she found herself an unwilling "guest" in the secluded house on a tiny tropical island--a house from which there seemed to be no escape. Suddenly even inanimate things -- the mahogany carvings, the rare old books -- assumed a potency and menace she had never known. Certainly Ernesto and his boss, the mysterious Joe Rattner, were concealing some evil secret, and even Hank seemed strangely distant and elusive. One inexplicable event followed another, and Ellen's terror mounted. Faced with an ominous pair of bloody earrings, the threat of Indian vengeance, and a maniacal killer, she couldn't even begin to think of a way out. But the alternative to escape was death...
