King Bartol of Kaikara has negotiated a peace treaty with Kaikara's one-time enemy, Tarfor, part of which involves the marriage of his son, Prince Gareth, to the Tarfori King's daughter. Bartol's daughter, Princess Siriatre, has serious doubts about the treaty â€" after all, the Tarfori have been trying to conquer Kaikara for nearly two hundred years.
