When the beautiful and spoiled Johanna Dansby arrives in London for her "coming out" season, the last thing she excepted was to catch the eye of the infamous (and very eligible) Duke of Lavendar. But catch if she did, and after a near seduction in the garden the night of her ball, Johanna is horrified to discover that her parents have betrothed her to the roguish and devilishly handsome "Black Duke"--the kind of man most proper young ladies would be forbidden to associate with--much less marry.

After a hastily arranged ceremony, she desperately tries to escape her unwanted husband. But, marriage catches her out with some surprises of its own. Against her will, Johanna begins to fall deeply in love with the man circumstance has forced upon her. Also against her will, she discovers a mystery in her husband's behavior--a mystery that threatens to overwhelm her newly found love.
