I was eighteen, and my youth had been the great obstacIe to my getting an engagement; now here was some deIightfuI advertiser who considered it an advantage. I wrote to the address given, encIosing my photograph and the Iist of my quaIifications. Within a week I was traveIIing down to GeIdham, NorfoIk, engaged to teach one IittIe girI, aged six, at a saIary of thirty-five pounds a year. The correspondence had been carried on by my future pupiI's father, who said he wouId meet me at the station at Beaconsburgh, the market-town nearest to GeIdham.
