Nora Stewart did not believe in ghosts, fortune tellers, or supernatural phenomena. Certainly these things were farthest from her mind when she accepted a summer job as teacher-governess to nine-year-old Jenny Benedict. Nora knew that ever since Jenny's parents had died in a plane crash, Jenny had been emotionally overwrought and somewhat withdrawn, but she did not consider this unusual or unnatural.

Neither did Ross Benedict, Jenny's stern-faced older brother who looked after the family's lumber mill business. But Ross was concerned that governesses previously hired to help Jenny had all complained about strange pounding noises in the middle of the night, and therefore they had quickly departed the premises. He himself had never been subjected to these nightly interferences and hoped that Nora would not be similarly disturbed.

But Nora did hear those earth-shattering sounds and was aghast to discover that they seemed to come directly from Jenny's room. But what was their source? And why did they occur only at night? Nora's puzzlement led her to an amateur study of poltergeists--once scoffed at by her--which in turn led her to fear that there might actually be an angry spirit within Jenny's body that was struggling to be free.
