A shrill scream one early morning begins a series of events which Hazel Downes finds herself unable to control.

She becomes involved with the Casson family who lives at Sevenstones. Hazel is convinced that the scream is something to do with Dawn Casson's death in a car crash that same day.

Richie Casson, Dawn's brother, seems belligerent and moody -- but he is also handsome and unusual and Hazel finds herself very attracted to him. There is something that seems to be troubling this man whom everyone despises.

Then Hazel discovers that there was more to Dawn's life than her family had realized. Who is the fair young man who claims to be Dawn's husband? In spite of her love for Richie, Hazel finds herself unable to refuse Mark's demands.
