Lily Bell had been brought up by her sister Merry after their parent died in a car crash. Despite their age difference, the sisters got on well and Merry held Lily spellbound by her apparent ability to move objects without touching them--a Victorian glass hand in particular. When Lily was only twelve Merry, then an art student, disappeared along with one of her boyfriends. Neither were ever seen again, and the blood found all over Merry's room suggested a violent end.
