Members of a divided Satterfield family fight for opposing causes. Jon, the family's hope for the future, drifts southward. When boyhood friends, the sons of General Robert E. Lee, join their father, Jon enlists as a member of Lee's staff. The Satterfield family patriarch, Scottie, begins the war as Lincoln's Assistant Secretary of War Procurement. As the war progresses, the Satterfields engage with the most famous and colorful personalities of the time. Jon commands a cavalry regiment and meets his brother-in-law on the field of battle. Andrew Kelly, Scottie's illegitimate son, decides to take revenge on his uncaring father by killing Satterfields under the cloak of the battlefield. Andrew pursues his prey until he confronts Scottie and Jon at the war's end.
