Nearing the end of his days Maimonides, the great twelfth-century Jewish sage, doctor, and scholar, reviews his life-- his defeats and losses as well as his achievements. By now he is an eminent man-- kings and caliphs, Christian and Arab, have come to him to cure their ills-- and he is living out his years in Cairo. He understands-- he has long understood-- that never again will he see Cordova, the magnificent city of his birth where Jew and Arab and Spaniard had lived for three hundred years in grace and harmony.
