The threads of fate...
The old man clung fiercely to life, as the shadow of death loomed closer daily.
The young woman groped desperately for an elusive love which mocked and danced away from her. Strange allies against unknown, almost intangible forces of dreadful menace, they prepared to stand their ground until all hope was gone. But the threads of courage they grasped grew thinner by the hour, and the evil forces they could not understand grew denser and more sinister around THE BROODING HOUSE.

Violence and murder were far from the mind of Larcy Ryan, red-haired, blue-eyed and twenty-three, when she took the job as private nurse to David Magnam, a terminal cancer and heart patient in his late sixties.
Young Pete Crimmins did his best to persuade her to leave her post in that strange house on Lake Huron and marry him, but she wasn't quite ready for marriage…yet.
Of course David Magnam was a difficult patient; and of course he was afraid -- of dying. Any man in his position would be. But that was not the only fear Larcy felt. There was menace and terror in every corner and cranny of that house -- menace and terror that were inexplicable until she probed too deeply into its sinister secrets.
