A twelve-year-old boy from a parallel universe, destined to be heir to the throne of his ailing father, the King, is transported to Earth through a vortex for protection from a catastrophic event befalling his planet. Not wanting to be successor to the throne, he escapes his guardians and is overcome by Earth's weather, and collapses beside a road. An elderly woman finds him and nurses him back to health. Later, an Indian boy and a mountain man befriend him and teach him the art of hunting bears and the wonders of the forest. With the King on his deathbed, official contact is made with Earth, and he is taken there for surgery. After recovering he is confronted by an enemy, who wants only his son to be the successor. Failing in his quest, he wages a mini-war against Earth, and is quickly defeated and killed. A quid pro quo with Earth, for the assimilation of its people, breaks down and they must find a way to return home.
