When Lissa Dow decides to move to Silverton, Colorado, on the spur of the moment, she has no idea how her life will change. Despite the warnings from Aunt Lydia, a relative who has raised her since her parents were killed, she rents a charming Victorian cottage and moves in. In the middle of her first night in the house, she hears a man bellowing out the tune to "Loch Lomond." Convinced he's either a lunatic or a burglar, she races next door to Maggie, the woman who rented her the house, where she learns that the intruder is actually her landlord, John MacNeill, who is supposed to be living in California. Once the confusion is straightened out, she's able to stay in the house.

A former art teacher, Lissa begins a new career as an artist after being offered an exhibit at an exclusive Denver gallery. She also begins to fall in love with John but fights the attraction when she is introduced to his ex-wife, Veronique, a schemer who wants her husband--and his money--back.

As their romance progresses, John and Lissa find that the path of love is not always smooth: a child he forgot to mention, Lissa's desire to remain independent, and Veronique's jealousy combine to force Lissa into a situation that may cost her her life.
