A phone call from the morgue sends Coroner's Chief Investigator, Jessica Canby, to Bel Air to investigate the death of billionaire Robert Berrington whose body has been found in the smoldering ashes of his mansion.

Jessica becomes convinced that Berrington has been murdered, but she can't prove it and the powers-that-be are pressuring her to close the case. Jessica is smart, witty and intrepid, and despite being six months pregnant, she refuses to yield to the pressure. She suspects that Berrington's murder is part of an elaborate cover-up to foist a dangerous technology on an unsuspecting public.

Jessica finds herself pitted against powerful and influential opponents who will stop at nothing to prevent the truth from coming out. She puts her life, and the life of her unborn baby on the line to stop them.
