Secretive men, ancient spies, a huge cache of treasure, and, most amazing of all, secrets concerning England's greatest playwright await readers in SHAKESPEARE'S BLOOD.
While vacationing in Britain, Mercedes Maxwell discovers a corpse in an old castle. Soon afterward, her traveling companion is murdered, and Mercedes is horrified to learn the police find her their most likely suspect.
An old journal discovered in her luggage might connect the two crimes, but the inspector in charge deems it worthless. When Mercedes tries to figure out the book's secrets by herself, she's spun into a world of terror. Desperate to get the journal, the killer chases her across Britain, murdering anyone who gets in his way by methods seen in various Shakespeare plays.
By chance--or perhaps not--Mercedes meets Colm, an attractive actor who seems determined to protect her. As they follow the clues to Scotland, she gets the feeling he knows things he isn't telling, so she leaves him behind and continues on her own.
She isn't alone in her search. There's an odd-looking man following her, and Colm's old lover shows great interest in journal. A young policeman claims he wants to protect her, but he's unwilling to step outside the law to do so.
In Salisbury Mercedes finds David, an elderly scholar who knows a lot about events described in the journal. He wants to help solve the mystery--at least that's what he says. Mercedes has to ask herself who can be trusted when Spanish gold is involved. That's a hard question to answer, but she's aware her search is no longer only about Shakespeare's blood. Her own blood is at risk as well.
