Second Genesis is the first in a multi-part series created to explore a universe where good and evil are engaged in constant struggle and man has been enlisted to fight on the behalf of the good. The premise for the series is that there must be other sentient creatures out among the stars, and if those other sentients are intelligent, they must also wonder if they are alone in the vastness. And if they are curious, then they must also be seeking the answers we ourselves ponder, but also be limited by the same constraints that hold us to our native world. But more than that, if the universe has a distinct and unyielding set of physical laws that govern our progress and our actions, then why not a distinct moral philosophy as well? The book, and its successors, intertwines mankind's prevailing good versus evil philosophy with the sci-fi genre, and answers the question 'was there an inherent behavioral instinct that gave us a boost out of the muck and on to the stars'? So, given the tools to understand, explore, and affect the universe, wouldn't we find out there, not the moral relativism of the Star Trek universe, or the moral indifference of the Firefly universe, but instead a universal moral philosophy and balance of good and evil, and wouldn't that make the human race, as it treds on the planets of other stars, missionaries as well as explorers?
