Chief Officer John Steele was disillusioned with his ship; the SHANTUNG was the slowest old tramp on the China Seas, and her Captain was another fading relic. The SHANTUNG sailed from Saigon, the port of war-torn Vietnam, and was promptly hi-jacked by the Viet Cong. John Steele, helped by the lovely but unpredictable Evelyn Ryan, gave them a much tougher fight than they had expected, but it was Captain Butcher who exacted a final, terrible vengeance.
