Afterwards, Beth wondered why she had felt no premonition, no hint of danger, when Adam Heller invited her to a house called Riversbend. But at the time, still in shock over her father's death, she had felt only gratitude.

The local people spoke of a curse. A curse that had taken its toll on the lives of three of the Hellers, leaving young Mark and Anne orphans. Slowly, Beth began to sense a sinister pattern to the tragedies -- even as she was falling under the spell of Riversbend's enigmatic master. But the pattern would not be complete without one more death: her own.

She had nowhere to turn, no place to run to. The man she loved was the man she trusted least. Her only choice was to uncover the sinister secret that was hidden in the past, in the room that was always kept locked. In the very shadows of Riversbend, before she fell victim to the curse of RIVERSBEND.

Adam's eyes narrowed. “You aren't dreaming of some fairytale existence with my cousin Christian, are you? Because I can assure you it will never come about. He is not a man to be satisfied with one woman for any length of time.”
“Why, how -- how can you say such a thing to me.” I spluttered. “I have barely met your cousin. Is it your opinion that I am the type of woman who sets her cap for a man moments after meeting him?”
Adam took me by the arms in a grip of iron. “Do you deny that ever since we set out on this ride you have been wishing that it was he accompanying you, rather than I.”
It was the impact of his eyes, just now turned slate-blue, more than his nearness that covered me with confusion. That, and a helpless feeling that I could have no secrets from him. I cast about for words of sharp denial, but could find none.
“Ah,” he said grimly, “I have hit the mark.” He pulled me closer. “Nevertheless, I will have something of this day for myself.”
With that, he bent his head and kissed me -- kissed me angrily, punishingly. Its harshness stirred some deep, hidden need in me. I was caught up in it, powerless to resist. To my shame, it was he, not I, who pulled away at last.
His eyes still gleamed with anger, but there was triumph in them, too…
