Rich Relations
It was Bervie Cromallie who introduced Jane to the low hills of Deeside, for it was Bervie who arranged that Jane should go to the House of Corrie as governess to Nandy Hartwood's children. There, with Bervie as a close neighbour, Jane settled down to a life of quiet happiness exquisitely heightened at each moment of meeting with Bervie's brother, Colin. A chance encounter with a quiet stranger from the South had a similarly disturbing effect on the shy, grave-eyed Bervie, and together the two girls sipped the bitter-sweet joys of new love.

But circumstance, abetted by the malicious tongue of an old-woman busybody, can play the cruellest of tricks as both Bervie and Jane learned to their cost.
